Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 14.5 HP briggs in a Montgomery ward rider, blown head gasket, hp briggs

Question
I have two problems first is the engine, it runs well then all of a sudden it seems to suck oil through the intake, blow out a massive cloud of smoke then it will clear up, run well and a few minutes later it will do it again or when you did a sudden stop or on an incline or downgrade slope it would seem to cause it to belch a cloud of smoke. Also the mower deck shakes and vibrates when engaged, I checked the bearings and balanced the blades, no improvement.

Answer
 Hello Jacob:

Check the Crankcase Vent on the Side of the Engine Block where the Carb is Located. You should see a Rubber Tube running from the Crankcase Vent to the Carb. If the Vent is Bad it will Allow Oil to be Sucked into the the Carb Intake. A Blown Head Gasket between the Cylinder and Valve Port on some Engines (OHV) Causes the Same Problem, only the Oil is Sucked into the Intake Valve when its the Head Gasket. I Require the Model Number of the Engine to help more. The Deck Vibration could Still Be in the Quill Assemblies. If a Bearing inside the Quill Assembly is Going Bad; when Pressure is Applied to the Quil by way of the Belt being Tightened it causes the Bearing to be in a Bind. Is Either of the Quills making a Loud Bearing Noise when you Turn them by Hand? If so the Bearings Are Going Bad. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
