Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mower wont start, visible aspect, flywheel

Question
Do I use a steering wheel puller to remove the flywheel or is there a homegrown solution. I will check around but are the keys standard and intuitive in replacing or is it model specific?
The reason I thought the key was intact was that when I removed the nut and cap over the flywheel I could see a groove in the spline and what appeared to be the key in the groove. If the key has been sheared off, am I to understand that when the flywheel is removed, the two pieces of the key will fall out of the grooved spline and some internal and as yet not visible aspect of the flywheel?

Question -
6HP B&S engine Sears Crafstman mower.
Recent history: Was loaned out and hit rock. Replaced blade. Ran for a few hours and then stopped suddenly (not another rock). Friend said blade was loose and he tightened it. Engine won't start. Had been running fine on same gas.
I cleaned the openings in the bowl nut.
Filter is clean.
Plug is getting spark (pulled rope with plug out and visible).
Sprayed carb cleaner directly into carb and also into cylinder and still would not even burp.
Removed the shroud and flywheel key appear to be in place.
When the flywheel is aligned with the solid state ignition gap, it appears the exhaust(? upper right corner looking into plug hole... only one visible) port is full open. Is this the normal timing position?
As I pull and pull and pull the rope, there is a point where occasionally I feel a slight recoil.
Any suggestions?

 Hello Jim:

You Cannot Check the Flywheel Key without Removing the Flywheel. Remove the Flywheel and Replace the Key. The Timing is Off and the Flywheel Key is what Times the Engine. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Jim:

Yes, a Steering Wheel Puller is Used to Remove the Flywheel. Tighten the Puller and then Hit the Puller with a Hammer to Jar it. Repeat until the Flywheel Pops Up. On some Engines the Keyway of the Flywheel Cant be Seen. The Key will Look Good but Actually be Sheared or Cut Just Enough to throw off the Timing. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck
