Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 5.5 HP, briggs and stratton, point gap

Question
This mower is close to 10 years old.  After I prime the carb as instructed and then I pull the starter cord the engine will kick back pulling the cord out of my hand.
There is a small puff of smoke and she will not start.
IO have checked and gapped the plug. I believe this is a Briggs and Stratton engine.

Please advise.

First, have you replaced or adjusted the points?

You appear to have a timing issue, a point gap that is a bit too close will cause this, but a semi-sheared or fully sheared flywheel key will also.  I just go for the easy stuff first - lol.

Lemme know ok?
