Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): # HP Briggs recoil Shaft & bearing, starter clutch, hp briggs

Question
I've got an older 3HP B&S lawnmower that runs great but has started piling up the recoil spring once running.

The shaft atop the flywheel that the pull rope hooks to seems to need a new bearing ... How do I get that part off the engine?

Thanks
Greg

Answer
 Hello Greg:

If you have had the Blower Housing Off then you know what the Starter Clutch is. You dont need a new Starter Clutch. Clean and Lube the Old one. Remove the Screen bolts from the Starter Clutch. Take a Sharpened Scraper and POP the LOWER CAP off the Starter Clutch. the Tall Square Tower will lift off the Support Nipple of the Crankshaft. Clean and Lube the Ball Bearings and the Support Nipple. Put the Tower back onto the Nipple and ensure that it spins free. Lube all Parts with WD-40. With the Tower in Place, you Replace the Ball Bearings into the Starter Clutch and Replace the Top Cover with a slight tapping until it is reseated onto the Starter Housing Base. The Starter Clutch should turn Counter Clockwise and Lock Up when turned Clockwise. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck
