Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 22hp oil consumption, vent tube, piston rod

Question
John,
Last fall I rebuilt a 22hp B&S engine used in my Dixon Ram50 zturn mower.  (while changing the oil it started raining and in the scramble to get everything indoors, I failed to refill it with oil.  It ran 12 hours before a piston rod finally crunched.)

After the rebuild, all was fine until recently it began consuming quite a bit of oil (1 qt every 5 hours).
The plugs are sooty black but not oily.
When I remove the air filter I can see blue smoke mixing with the incoming air from the crankecase vent tube that dumps into the air intake port, under the air filter.

My suspicion is that for some reason oil fumes are being pulled out of the crankecase and into the air intake stream.

Any ideas on what's going on here?
The oil fill tube is in position, but I guess that doesn't mean the O-ring is really doing it's job.
How many things can be "amiss" that would allow the carburator to pull fumes from the crankcase?

Thanks for your expertise and help.

Answer
 Hello Dustin:

1- It sounds like the Oil Ring Collasped. This is a common Problem with Rebuilt Engines. 2- It could be the Crankcase Vent isnt working. If it stops working then Oil can be Sucked up into the Carb thru either the air Filter to the Carb Throat depending on where the Vent tube Connects. How bad is the Blow By? That will determine the Condition of the Rings. Did you use Quick Seat Rings or Steel Rings? What was the End Gap of the Rings wwhen Installed? All these Questions I have asked make a difference. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
