Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): replacing belt, crankshaft pulley, power path

Question
I have a craftsman 17hp riding mower model #917.270722. My deck belt broke, and I found a replacement, same size, but when i installed by the diagram on the deck witch shows the normal pattern for deck belt, is too tight, even before engaging. Is there a way to find a diagram that shows all parts on the deck rather than just the puleys? What Im I doing wrong?

Answer
Hi Danny,

Sorry, I don't know of a diagram to show you.
I would trace the power path from the crankshaft pulley to the deck.  Note the rotation of the crankshaft and blades. The backside of the belt usually goes around the idler pulley.  Try different configurations until it fits.  The belt can only work one way and usually will only go on one way.

Let me know how you make out.
