Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Carburetor adjustment on a 6 horse Tecumseh, troy built tiller, adjustment screws

Question
I have an old (13 years) Tecumseh engine on a Troy Built tiller.  The carb has an adjustment screw in the bottom of the float bowl and an adjustment along the side of the carb body (needle valve, I think).  Currently, the engine will run for a while but tends to stall out, especially under a load.  I can't quite seem to find the right combination between the two adjustment screws.  I clean out the carb and put in a new spark plug each spring.  Starts fine, just doesn't run well at all.

Thanks!!
Dave

Answer
 Hello Dave:

 1. With the Engine Running; take a piece of Wire (safety wire) and Attach it to the Govenor Control on the Carb. Using this wire Accelerate the Engine to full and Adjust the Screw in the Bottom of the Bowl in/out until the Engine starts to Over Rev. STOP! Turn Back 1/4 Turn and Stop( this is Approx Setting. Minute Setting can be made). Now the High Fuel Mixture Screw is Set. 2.With the Engine Running; Accelerate the Engine. If there is Hesitation or it Stops then Restart the Engine; now Turn the Screw in/out as you manually Accelerate the Engine. When you have No Hesitation then the Low Fuel Mixture is Set. Now Set the Idle. Hope that Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
