Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Stihl FS85 String Trimmer Wont Run Fast, strim, string trimmer

Question
Hi. Thanks for the lead, but it didn't help. The exhaust was squeeky clean. I have taken everything apart and blew out the  gas lines, carb lines, etc. The bowl primes great and keeps fuel in it.

This may help: If I keep the throttle down all the way, it speeds up and then slows way down, and then speeds up, and then down, until it finally cuts out.

Thanks!

Dan

Question -
I have a Stihl FS85 weedeater / strim trimmer that is about 5-6 years old. Used regularly around the house (not commercial), and in otherwise excellent condition.

It idles great and runs at high speed great for about 5 minutes, and then it will only idle. I can restart it and it idles fine, but when I give it gas it sputters out. Every once in a while I can coax it to run full speed for 2 to 3 minutes.

The unit has had the carb gaskets replaced, the fuel bowl replaced, the fuel line and fuel return line replaced, spark plug replaced, fuel filter replaced, air filter replaced, carb soaked and cleaned, new gas, new oil, and still the same results.

The unit does not have a high mixture screw that I can find...only a LOW (idle) and a LA (that is used to slow down the idle until the head stops spinning according to the manual).

The bowl primes well but ends up empty (not sure if it is supposed to or not).
Can you help?

Dan my experience with these units is limited but I do know one thing.  A build-up of soot in the exhaust manifold will cause the symptoms you have.  Take the exhaust system apart and clean it thoroughly!  Try it again & lemme know how it goes!

Answer
Hey Dan-
Only additional info I have is that the newer FS85's that don't have mixture screws have had some carb issue's, and most of the time- it takes a new carb to fix.  That's generally 40-65$ repair.  Still lots less than a new FS85 (299.00)

Sorry I couldn't be more help on this- oh- just to be sure- loosen your fuel cap & try it again(just in case its clogged & the tanks drawing a vacuum)
