Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): pull cord slipping/not engaging, starter clutch, liquid wrench

Question
John,
I have a Craftsman 6.5 hp self propelled lawnmower.  When I pull on the cord, there is no resistance, the cord recoils okay but it keeps slipping.  After several pulls, I can sometime get the cord to lock and I can start the mower.
Thanks,

Answer
 Hello Jose:

You have a Sticking Starter Clutch. You can use WD40 or Liquid Wrench to Stop this Problem if the Rust hasnt gotten too Bad.  Remove the Spark Plug. Now Remove the Engine Cover and you will see the Starter Clutch in the Center of the Engine. It looks like a Square Tower. There is a Small Hole in the Center of the Clutch.  Spray your Penetrating Oil on Top of the Clutch and Around the Base of this Tower where it enters the Clutch Housing. You will see a Rubber seal at the Base of the Tower. Let set for 10 min. The Clutch Tower should turn free going Counter Clockwise and Lockup going Clockwise.  If this doesnt Fix the Problen then you will need a New Starter Clutch.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
