Recently bought a used craftsman riding mower. Worked good but when I tried to restart battery was dead. While hooking up charger noticed that the black wire was on the + terminal while the red wire was on the - terminal. The red wire leads to a solanode? while the black wire is to the frame. With my limited knowledge I believe the wires are reversed....NEED YOUR ADVICE....THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP
Answer -
I would agree with you.  Did the mower start with the wires connected as they are before?

Eric

Mower ran fine but when it stopped and wouldn't start I removed the battery to charge and noticed the way it was wired. To chicken to reinstall without more knowledge of what I should do next. Former owner said it was a new battery but admitted that he had charged it in reverse and took another day to recharge correctly. My thoughts are to reinstall with red to + and black to - and see if we're correct but afraid of what might happen if we're wrong or that I might ruin something or blow up my area of East Tenn. If you agree let me know. YOUR MY NEW HERO and they have more batteries at Home Depot if I blow this one up. Let me know your thoughts when time permits and THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND THOUGHTS

Answer -
I don't think I would trust your old battery.  When the battery is connected with reversed polarity the starter usually turns backwards and the charging diode normally destroys its self.

I would either find another battery or purchase a new one, charge and correctly install it and see if the mower starts.

We had a couple of batteries reverse polarity recently and we returned the batteries to our dealer.

Let me know what you decide to do.

ERIC.....with your help... and advice...EVERYTHING is working like it should. Obviously nominated you for expert of the month but really should be for THE YEAR. Saw your background and I grew up in Milwaukee [Shorewood] Lived in Minocqua for a few years and assure you if our paths cross I'm buying. In fact every time I meet an Eric from now on I'll buy him a beer in your honor. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND WISDOM.

Answer
MMMMMMMM...beer.

Keep an eye on battery to make sure it is charging and does not reverse polarity.

We had a couple of batteries this year, on the same mower, reverse polarity.  We don't know exactly why they switched polarity but we may have received a couple of defective batteries.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Eric
