Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray Walk behind Transmission, hydraulic fluid, well thanks

Question
I recently received a Murray 21741A mower from a neighbor which is  a self-propelled RWD walk behind mower.  However, I can't get the self-propelled feature to work.

This mower has a cable-activated RWD transmission, which is supposed to pull a lever on the transmission to engage the power drive. However, when I squeeze the control to engage the power drive, the lever on the transmission barely moves (i.e. the cable does not pull the lever enough to engage). I can get the transmission to work by forcing the lever on the transmission to move with a screwdriver, so it is capable of working. I have tried adjusting the trim dial for the cable housing without success and the cable moves freely.

Do you know if there are any adjustments on the transmission itself?  I did top-off the hydraulic fluid in the transmission, but that did nothing.  If you know of any diagrams of this component, I'd appreciate a link to that as well.  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi JSC,

There usually is an adjustment for the cable.  If you can find one, you can shorten the cable.  Another possibility is that one of the levers may have slipped on it's shaft.  Check to see if there is play in either lever.  If you find nothing, you might be able to bend one of the levers enough, to allow the transmission engagement shaft to move enough, to activate the drive.

Good Luck,
Michael
