Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Montgomery Ward Riding Mower-Wont Start, briggs and stratton, rear fenders

Question
Hi Eric!]

It looks like two wires, one red, one red w/white stripe. Not sure now if that's the solenoid or not or just something to hold those two wires in place.  However, they are not coming from the starter.  Where would the spark plug be?  It looks like it's difficult to take off the part of the engine that has the "blades" in it.  The main motor perhaps?

Thanks again for your help and patience. I'm trying to learn!

Patti

Hi Eric,

My Mont Ward Riding Mower won't start. It's 14.5 Briggs and Stratton engine. Never had a problem w/it since bought new circa 1996. Have new battery, cleaned all connections. Will crank when by passing the starter(?) All connections are good, via voltage tester. Is there a spark plug in this model (don't have the book anymore).
Appreciate your assistance.

At least one spark plug.  How many wires are on the solenoid?

Let me know.

Answer
Do you have the mower model number.  It is usually on the rear of the mower, under the seat or under the rear fenders.

You can locate the spark plug(s) by locating the large diameter black wire on the engine.  It should stand out as it will be the biggest wire in the engine compartment other than the starter wire.

Do you have a volt meter?
