Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): where to buy B&S governor gear shaft, overhead valve engines, twin cylinder engine

Question
QUESTION: My B&S 20HP Intek twin cylinder engine rev'd out of control bending rods and seizing the governor gear to its shaft.   The repair shop says they can fix the rods, but the governor gear shaft can't be purchased separately as B&S sells it only with a new block.   I'm hoping B&S stands for BS and you can tell where to find an after market part.
Thanks!

ANSWER: Hello Tom:

>>That's a New One. I have Replaced these Shafts All the Time.
>>Unless your Engine Model is an Exception, you should be Able to Locate and Purchase the Shaft at/from www.outdoordistributors.com (877-707-2787).
>>Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have these numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER the Briggs cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code. If this is a Briggs and Stratton  Engine, then you can Also Use this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf for Assistance in Locating the Model, Type and Code Numbers of the Engine.

Answer
Hi Tom:

>>Thanks. These Helped a Lot.
>>This is One I Do Not have to Look up.
>>I am Afraid you have One of the Better Ideas Engines from the Engineering Department at Briggs and Stratton.
>>The Governor Shaft is a Part of the Block for this Model Engine.
>>You have one of the Few Models that Use this Style Governor. I Spoke with the Briggs Rep a Few Years ago about these Model Engines Governor Set Up and we Joked about this Engine being Designed by a Former Ford Engineer. LOL.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Example: 407777-0184-E1. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Select Sectional Index. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View.
