Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): snow Champ Tecumseh 3 hp 2 cycle engine, web dealer, guage wire

I have an old snow champ snow blower (18yrs old) with a 3 hp tecumseh 2 cycle engine(AH600 type 1641). On the first start up this season I could not keep the engine running. With a squirt of starting fluid and full choke the engine will start right up and die shortly thereafter. If I pump the primer bulb continuously I can keep the engine running. As soon as I stop pumping the engine dies. I pulled the carb and disassembled. The needlle and seat, float and float bowl were all clean. I poked small guage wire through all known holes and sprayed carb cleaner (using a spray tube) into all orifices. I did this twice. Fuel appears to flow freely into the bowl as it's full when I remove the bowl. Any advice would be helpful. Also, can you advise where I can get parts for both the engine and snow blower?

Thanks in advance,

Joe Dietrich
Answer -
If the engine runs while you prime it then the compression, ignition and timing are fine.

This leaves only the carburetor to be at fault.  Are the gaskets in good shape.

Did you use an air compressor to blow through the carb orfices?

Engine parts can be located at any Tecumseh dealer.  Most small engine shops are dealer.  As for blower parts, most likely the machine was made by MTD, Murray or Atlas.  A knowledgable shop should be able to tell who made it and be able to get parts.

Let me know about the carb.

Thank you for the quick response! I figured you were going to tell me to go back to the carb - it make sense. The bowl and intake gaskets "looked" good but are original. I'll replace them as soon as I find the part number and correct web dealer. I didn't blow out the carb with air when I had it apart - I used gumout spray with the spray tube. I think I'll pull it apart and let it soak while I research a carb rebuild kit. As for the snow thrower parts it is an aircap snow champ.

Thanks in advance for your advice,

Joe

Answer
Carb parts should be fairly easy to find.

What part are you needing for the blower?  Aircap is pretty old and OEM parts can be difficult to find.  However, we can usually substitute common parts to keep the unit going.

Let me know what parts you need for the blower.
