Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh carb., low speed, full throttle

Question
I have a 5 horse tecumseh motor that will not idle. It will start and run full throttle but it will not idle. i have tried tuning the ilde needle and it has no effect. It will idle however when it is half choked. Does this mean something is plugged?
Thanks,
Mitch

Answer
Hi Mitch,

The large, high speed screw will have no effect on the idle.  If you can't get it to idle by adjusting the smaller, low speed mixture screw or the idle speed screw, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
