Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): gaping points and no spark, spark plug wires, external coils

Question
I have a 1981 polaris cutlass 340 snowmobile that I acquired from a fried this past summer.  He had no spark but the engine seemed to crank fine.  This winter I took of the starter pulley all the way down to the main part of the electronic system(points, the internal winding etc.)  I ordered all these parts and replaced them all.  I had to do some sodering of wires onto the condensers from the points and other things.  I put it all back together without setting the point gaps which gave me no spark at all when I turned it over.  Now I am in the process of breaking go back to where I started to set the gap on the points to .016.  I am very confused on how to set the gap which I have never down before.  Could you give me some insite on how to do this and wondering if this is causing a no spark.  During my rebuilding I also replaced the external coils which the spark plug wires go into.  I am wondering if my gaping is causing no spark or my kill switch or anything else.  All the electronics seem in good shape.  Please help this is perplexing me.

Answer
Hi Erik,

The points are gapped at .020, when the cam lobe is at the highest point.  If the coil is new and grounded properly you should have spark.  I am not familiar with the rest of the other wiring configuration, so I can't give info on that.

Good Luck,
Michael
