Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh 8HP engine, murray snowblower, loose hose

Question
Michael,
That's what's so puzzeling?  I didn't remove any hoses or connections, at least not intentionally.  I was told to clean out the fuel bowl because the dealer thought I had bad gasoline, so I did what he said.  Isn't the fuel bowl the same as the carburetor?  That's what the operator's manaul showed, an upside down silver tin cup like item with a spring loaded bowl drain at the bottom?  In the past, when I push the primer 2 or 3 times before start up, any excess fuel is exited via the bowl drain, so I know the primer works.  Now it's like pushing air, and doesn't feel like any fuel is being moved..

I took the whole side cover off, but didn't notice any loose hose connections, but that's what it sounds like.  Sounds like the connection to the primer bulb is loose and not the side to the carburetor, but I can't get to the bulb side without removing many more botls, something I am not willing to go forward with unless provided with detailed directions.

Fuel valve is open because after 40-50 pulls, by luck, the engine does start.  But I don't have 40-50 pulls in strength before I plow my driveway, so there is got to be a better way.

How do I get to the air intake?  To squirt some gas to get started.

Your prompt response is much appreciated.  Thanks again.

I have a 3 year old Murray snowblower with a Tecumseh 8HP engine.  Always ran rough, back fires alot.  Finally called lacal dealer, and was told had bad gas so I emptied gas tank and cleaned fuel bowl.  With new gas in tank, notice gas leak.  Must have re-installed fuel bowl incorrctly, or mis-aligned, so had to drain fuel again.  Finally aligned the o-ring, leak stopped.  Now trying to start engine, primer bulb doesn't push gas, feels empty and like pushing air instead.  Now I can't even get the engine started because I can't even prime the engine.  Did I undo some kind of hose or connection to the fuel bowl?

With nothing else I can do, decided to check out the plug ( should have done this first, I think)  It was full of carbon build up, so I think this may be the cause of the rough running.

Looking back, I should have left the fule bowl as is, and lived with the rough engine, at least it always started on the first pull, and the primer bulb always worked.  Now I have 2 problems that I can't solve.  Thanks.

Hi Albert,

I'm not sure what hoses you removed and did or didn't put back correctly.
1. Check the primer hose that should connect to the carb.  2. Make sure that the fuel shut off valve is open.
3. Check for a good fuel flow at the carb fuel inlet.
If no change, try to start it by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb's air intake.  It may keep running on its own at that point.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael

Answer
Hi Albert,

There is a metal cover that bolts to the carb and the block.  When you remove it, you will see the entire carb and may be able to trace the primer lines.
The fuel bowl is attached to the underside of the carb.  If there is a clog in the carb, a complete carb cleaning may need to be done.
