Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Roper LT110br Transaxle, high pressure washer, drive pulley

Question
 Eric,
My boss gave me an old Roper 11HP riding tractor which I repaired  and got it running excellent. My son blew reverse gear, so I used it without having to drive in reverse.  Now it is stuck in 1st gear and it won't come back out ( even with the clutch pushed in).
Can I rebuild the transaxle, or is it too outdated to find parts /(gears).
            Thanks,

Answer
Most likely the problem is in the transmission.  Many late model mowers use pins located on the gear shaft of the transmission to engage/change gears.  If these pins break, which happens frequently, you normally loose reverse first and then you can select one gear and the transmission gets stuck in that gear.

You will have to remove the transmission and dis-assblem it.  The transmission is pretty simple.  I would recommend cleaning the trans with a high pressure washer before you dis-assemlbe it.  There is usually one bolt, located under the drive pulley, that has to be removed to seperate the casing...this bolt is usually had to find because dirt fills the hole and covers it.

The only thing you need to line up when re-assembly is ready it the bushings on the shafts.  There will be a spot on the bushing that needs to be set in the casing...this keeps the bushing from spinning.

The other item to watch out for is the sping and detent ball located on the shifter fan...just don't loose these parts when you dis-assemlbe it.

The washers between the gears may have bevels cut on one side...just carefully place them in the correct order when dis-assembling and reverse the order when you put it back together.

Let me know if the pins are broke.
