Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Generator pull cord slips, starter clutch, gas generator

Question
Hi Marc,
I have an older gas generator.
When I pull on the cord, it pulls and turns the pulley, but it doesn't turn over the engine - just turns and pulls very easily.
What should I look for when I open it up?
Thanks for your help
JK

Answer
Depending on the type of engine, it will either have a starter clutch (Briggs) that will need to be replaced or it will have starter pawls (Tecumseh and others) that are either worn out or seized or the starter cup they engage is worn out.  The mechanisms are fairly straightforward and you should notice this when you remove the starter housing.  Hope this helps.
