Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 6.25 w/tecumseh wont start, correct key, fuel flow

Question
Hello,
I bought a used mower and the seller said it had trouble starting.  I got it started (miraculously) when i got it home but it didnt run right. After inspection I found the key was sheared. Removed flywheel, replaced key, tightened best I could without a air wrench.  Now it still wont start.  It has a spark, good gas, still wont run.  Any ideas?
thanks in advance
Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Hopefully they gave you the correct key.  Some are straight and some are offset.
Since you have spark, we can suspect a lack of fuel flow.
Try to start it while squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it starts and you can keep it running by adding fuel, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.
You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
