Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman starts, races, then stalls., self propelled lawn mower, engine gasket

I have a Craftsman Self Propelled Lawn Mower. The engine starts right up but races on a very high speed and then stalls. When I tilt the mower forward or if I'm going downhill it doesn't stall. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

Hi Rick,

A lean condition would cause the racing.  Check the carb-to-engine gasket for air leaks.  Next, I would inspect the carb internally, especially the float for a blockage that is shutting off the fuel.
