Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 16.5 Fuel/Carb Problem., carb adjustments, tank lines

Question
Michael,
I have a Murray rider, with a B&S 16.5hp engine. I recently disassembled and cleaned the carb and fuel tank/lines (trash). After putting it back on, it started and ran great until turned off. Then it wouldn't start back for 15-20 mins. Also, when idling down from full throttle, it will pop (don't think it's actually a backfire, just too much fuel?). I'm thinking that the carb is dumping too much fuel and flooding itself on shutdown (I can see fuel pooled at the bottom of the intake). I rechecked the assembly twice (I've rebuilt several automotive carbs, so I don't think I've put it back together wrong, but who knows). Any ideas?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Randy,

Since the engine runs well, I can't think of what you should change with the carb adjustments. You could try closing down the jets a bit.  If no change, then slow down the throttle gradually and let it idle for about 30 seconds before shutting the ignition off.  That may solve the problem and be the easiest solution.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
