Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S diaphragm carb, plastic tubes, long spring

Question
Hi I have an older model Briggs&Strat 3.5hp verticle shaft with Non Points/condenser ignition. (not sure of year)

Changed Diaphragm in carb, pulled out nylon plastic tubes, mixture screw, etc and blew compressed air throughout. Used cleaner and polished it up real good.

Reassembled Carb, put new long spring on choke lever,(on bottom of diaphragm) and put small coil spring with cap on carb side under the diaphragm not on the fuel tank (not sure if that is right or wrong!!!!)

Then reassembled all and as soon as I pull the starter gas shoots up through the air horn.

engine will start but really pumping fuel into the carb, sputtering and drowining in it.

What do you think?

thanks

Answer
Did you try using the Briggs website?  You can type in you model and type number and select the illustrated parts list that show how the parts go together.

The small spring, with the cap should go under the diaphragm next to the carb body.  Were the fuel pick-up tubes the same diameter?

Let me know.
