Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sears Craftsman Floods Out., sears craftsman, riding mower

Question
Eric, I have a sears craftsman GT3000 riding mower, with a  23 HP Kholer engine model CV674. When I try to start the engine gas will pour into the #1 cylinder head and out through the breather and flood the carburetor. It just pours out by the pints. I thought it was the fuel pump and tried changing it but that didn't work.I was working it one day and the next day that happened. What is causing the the gas to flood the valve compartment and what can I do to fix this? Thanks.

Answer
Drain all the oil!!  Refill with new oil.

The inlet needle did not/is not sealing in the carb.  The best method to check the inlet needle is to remove and inspect the carb.  There may have been a drop of water, bad fuel, a piece of grass or just age that is causing the inlet needle not to seal allowing gas to flow past the carb and into the engine.

We normally dis-assemble, clean the carb and replace the inlet needle/seat to cure the problem.

Does this help?
