Question
As I stated in my original E-Mail...the mower is about four years old, and Disconnecting the spark plug did nothing.
If possible, could you tell me how to check the gears/ Where is the cover, and how do I remove it?-------------------------

Question -
My 89 year old father is having trouble with starting his mower.  Checked the battery and it is fine (13.5 volts), but when I turn starter switch, the mower turns over for one second, then nothing, it usually does not turn over enough to start, although it tries every few seconds or so to turn over.  Today it made the sound like a bad starter (or what I have come to understand as a "bad starter sound" in cars)

I tried to clean the connections, and I disconnected the spark plug with no change.

The last time the mower started was last week, and it ran well after starting.

I really hate to just drop the mower off at Sears; can you assist me?  The mower is in otherwise good shape, and is about four years old.

Please advise sir,

If you remove the spark plug will the starter turn the engine over?

The pinion gears on most starters are plastic...the plastic gear may need to be replaced.  You will have to remove the cover to inspect the gear.

How old is the mower?

Answer
Sometimes there is a plastic cover covering the starter.  If you do not have the plastic cover then you can remove the engine cover.  There are 2 bolts on the spark plug side to remove.  You will also have to remove the fuel tank to gain access to the other 2 front engine cover bolts.  If you have a oil dipstick you will also want to remove the screw holding it in place.

With the 4-5 screws removed you should be able to remove the cover and inspect the starter pinion gear.

Let me know what you find.
