Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh engine burning oil, crankcase breather, valve guides

Question
Michael,
I have a Tecumseh 7hp engine that is roughly 15-20 yrs old and burns oil after I fill the crankcase with oil.  I am not overfilling the oil according to the dipstick.  The oil comes out of the block via a rubber hose which connects to the carburator.  When the oil level gets low enough, no more oil is blown by and burnt.  What could be causing this problem?  Thanks,
Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

With the engine being soo old, I suspect that there Is blow by at the rings or valve guides, which is over pressuring the crankcase.  You could check the crankcase breather and hose to see if it is partially clogged.  Otherwise the engine will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
