Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tractor locked in gear, rear wheels, yoke

Question
I have a older Murphy Ridung mower which has a locked transmission. Jacking up the tractor in the rear and rotating one wheel causes the oppsite wheel to turn in the oppsite direction. I cannot get the rear wheels to turn in the same direction even if the clutch is engaged. What could be wrong and is there a way to unlock the gears?

Answer
Hi Roger,

The opposite turning condition that you describe, is normal and due to the differential.  The transmission may be locked but you will need to disassemble that to see what is causing it.  It may be a broken shifter yoke.

Let me know how you make out.
