Question -
My question starts out with I was driving my 528i and went into the store when i came out it would not start. I don't get any sound such as clicking from the starter and I tried to jump it both with a jumpstart box and cables from another car Both of these failed. The battery was replaced less than a month ago. I did notice that the battery icon on dash went on when i started it originally and continued to stay on. When I turn the key I get no cranking sound. It reminded of years gone by when the neutral safety switch would go bad on older model american cars. Any help would be greatly appreciated  thanks Jim

Jim, was the battery dead? Were you able to charge the battery? What was the battery voltage when you tried to start it? What is the voltage when it doesn't start? What is the battery voltage with the engine running if you can get it started? If you have charged the battery and it is over 12.45 Volts what happens when you crank the motor over? If the battery voltage is this high and you don't at least get a clicking from the solenoid then try another vehicle master key and see if it starts. If the other key starts the car then the key has chip in the key is bad and you should order a new one (125$-150$) at the dealer with license and registration in hand. Please get back to me with these readings. Buy or borrow a digial voltmeter.

Answer
Jim, I would try replacing the electrical portion of the ignition switch. They are known to cause such complaints. Revove screws to column covers and split the cover halfs (depending on the style of column). Ignition switch is in the left side of the column and is removed by removing painted screws and remove the connector.
