Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Starter on Murry riding lawnmower/poulan weed eater, briggs and stratton, riding lawnmower

Question
I have a 11hp Murry riding lawnmower with a briggs and stratton. I was cutting grass and it ran out of gas. Well when the motor stop the starter was humming. So I shaked the ground wire at the battery and it stopped makeing the noise but it was smoking. Do you know what would of had cause this and what do I need to do?

I also have a poland weedeater that will not start. I looks like the primer is not getting gas in it.

Thanks alot,

Answer
Hi Nicky,

Sorry for my delay.  The holiday was busy and set me back.

The starter was continuing to run because of either a bad solenoid or keyswitch.  When it happens again, you will need to isolate each one, to find the part to replace.

The weedeater needs the carb disassembled and cleaned of dirt or gummed fuel.  Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Good luck,
Michael
