Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): where is oil drain plug?, oil drain plug, craftsman lawn mower

Question
I am attempting to change the oil in my newer Craftsman lawn mower. My older unit has the drain plug on the bottom side above the blade. This newer unit is approx. 5 years old, 6.0 rear drive, rear bagger, model 917-377160. It is not visible from the bottom. The maintenance program is up and this is my first time changing this one. And I also want to adjust the "speed control". The only speed left is fast when I pull back the control handle. Thanks for any advice advice.....

Answer
Hi Rick,

The drain plug should be either under the deck or near the top of the deck.  As a last resort, you could empty the gas tank and tip the mower to drain the oil through the oil filler tube.  This is what I had to do on some Hondas where the drain plug was hard to get at under the deck.

I assume you mean the ground speed for the wheel drive.  Check the cable to see if is moving the lever at the drive unit.  Adjust it to move the lever over the proper range so you can get the slower speed.

Let me know how you make out.
