Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Tractor mower deck, mechanical check, engine stalls

Question
Dear Sir:

I have a Craftsman 6 speed lawn tractor.  Was mowing when I hit a rock.  The tractor engine shut down.  The tractor will run when the mower deck is not engaged.  As soon as I engage the mower deck, the engine immediately shuts down.  I would greatly appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide.

Thank You

Answer
Hi Gregory,

You will need to determine if the problem is electrical or mechanical.  Check to see if the deck pulleys, belts and blades, spin freely. Does the belt squeal when the deck is engaged, while the engine stalls?  If these are okay, then check the safety kill switches.  One is usually located under the seat and the other at the blade engagement lever or switch.

Let me know what you find.
Michael
