Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): new lawnmower wont start, starter rope, poulan

Question
Brand new mower.Poulan self propelled 6.5hp. did work for one hour. I tilted it upside down to clean blade. oil and gas spilled. (why? should it have?) now it won't start. Checked filter ok. can't locate drain for oil. but did refill oil and gas. when I pull the starter rope a little whiff of white smoke comes out each time.  Please please help.

Answer
Hi Sharon,

Fluids WILL spill and go to places that they shouldn't, when any engine is tipped more than 30 or 45 degrees.  In the future you can avoid this by placing a heavy object on the handle and allow the deck to just be raised that much.  Place a large piece of cardboard or an old rug in front, to laydown on, for cleaning or blade removal.
The oil level should now be checked to see that it is correct. Change or clean the spark plug if it is wet.  The mower should start after a few tries.  It may run rough and smoke for a while but should clear out all the extra fuel and oil that has gotten to various places.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
