Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): key way, silicone spray, key way

When we start up our 2hp briggs it run smooth but then it starts to uncoil the pull start and then the key way snaps. What can I do to fix this problem?

Hi Tim,

I suspect a problem with the recoil bendix assembly.  The bendix should allow the engine to spin in the same direction of the recoil pull.  If it is dry, dirty and not free, it will do as you describe.  I would disassemble it and lube it with a light oil or silicone spray.
