Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Pushmower engine cutoff while running, briggs and straton, tah dah

Question
I have a Yard Machine, 21" Briggs and Straton motor, mulching w/ rear bagger (optional), push mower and it was running fine, made a popping/crackling/choking sound and cut off.  Like a switch was turned off.  Can not restart.  Fuel is fine.  I had trouble the last time I used it where it was running very sluggish etc, then I cleaned the air filter, tah dah,,,it ran great.  I used it maybe two minutes before it died.  I have used several tanks of gas since last year and my oil looks okay.  Any suggestions before buying a new mower?

Answer
From what you describe, it sounds like you have an ignition problem.  First, check for spark.  The ignition system should be able jump a spark over a 1/8" gap to ground if it's functioning correctly.  If you have a good strong spark, another issue could be dirt in the fuel system.  In that case, you would need to remove and clean the carb thoroughly.  You would also need to check the fuel tank for contamination as well.  Another problem could be a sheared flywheel key.  You would have to visually inspect the flywheel key.  Hope this helps.
