Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): troybuilt tiller tecumseh engine, troybilt tiller, fuel flow

Question
My Troybilt tiller will not run with the choke off. It seeems to run fairly good with the choke full on, but the instant you move the ch9oke to off, the motor quits. It's a 6hp Tecumseh. with electric start. It's a mid 80's

Answer
Hi David,

What you describe usually indicates a lack of fuel flow to the engine.  You can try opening the carb's mixture screws.  The carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to remove, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
