Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): go cart, briggs stratton, hp briggs

Question
hi i have a 5 hp briggs stratton go cart engine. about a month ago something broke with the govner setting and the engine wouldn start but not  idle. so my brother fixed it by putting a piece of wire where i guess the govener was. so now the engine has a tremendis amount of power when you run it at full throttle is this bad and is the engine runied. also i still ride it and use a little throttle them when you go up a hill im forced to use the full throttle and once ill get up it, the engine wants to stall and then dies. i took  the gas tank off cleaned it out, then took the carb off cleaned it with carb cleaner and tag wire. tryed it again and still does the same thing. plaes help thanks alot

Answer
Because you are running this without the governor and at who knows what RPM, it's difficult for me to say what the issue could be.  It's possible the fuel system isn't capable of supplying enough to keep the engine running at sustained RPM.  You may have burnt an exhaust valve and with lower compression, idling may be impossible.  There are a number of things that could be happening.  I recommend you repair the governor as running an otherwise unmodified engine at higher than recommend RPMs does not mean you get any extra power anyway.  Hope this helps.
