Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Belt slips on Craftsman 917.273281, craftsman 917, return spring

Question
Like other questioners my Craftsman 21HP, 48" mower, Model 917.283281 slips when going up any incline.  I have also changed the belt.  You suggest checking the Clutch return Spring, #55.  Where is it?  The Ground Drive drawing just places it on the diagram but draws no lines to where it is located.  I'm sure that is what is causing the problem but I can't seem to locate it.  Thank you.

Answer
Hello John:

>>If you Cannot Locate it, it May be Missing.
>>The Easiest Way to Locate the Location of the Clutch Idler Spring/Return Spring is to Remove the Deck and have Someone Operate the Clutch while you Look for the Clutch Idler/Actuator Bracket. The Spring is Attached to this Bracket and to the Frame so it Pulls the Belt Tight when the Clutch is Released.
>>To View a Breakdown of this Unit Go to this Site Addy, http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action?sid=PSHx20080114x00001 and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Search. From this Page you can View Diagrams and Parts Lists for you Equipment Using the "View Sub Components" Section Near the Bottom Left. Select the Ground Drive File.
>>The Clutch Idler Bracket is Called a Cl Bellcrank (#48) in the Breakdown.
>>The Spring is #55 in the Breakdown.
>>There is Usually Wear Marks from the Spring where it Hooks to the Idler/Bellcrank and in the Frame.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
