Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): how to take out a transmission, u bolts, kohler command

Question
i have a craftsman 15.5 hp kohler command with 42 inch deck, has 6 speeds and reverse all on the fender.bought new in 97.my gears are grinding and won't go forward or backwards, how do i go about tacking it out so i can put a new one in..

Answer
It's fairly straightforward.  Disconnect the drive belt and linkages from the shifter/brake as well as any electrical connectors.  You may also need to remove the input pulley (so the transmission has room to be removed from the chassis.  Then there is usually 4 attachment bolts (may be u-bolts) that attach the main housing of the transmission to the chassis of the tractor.  It is best to have the tractor suspended with a chain through the towing ball hole in the back of the tractor and the transmission can be lowered out of the chassis.  If you are using an engine hoist, you can raise the tractor chassis off of the transmission...same difference.  Hope this helps.
