Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton Flywheel Removal, murray riding lawnmower, briggs and stratton

Question
I have a 96 Murray Riding Lawnmower with a Briggs and Stratton Model # 287707 engine.  I bought it used and it has run like a champ until the starter ring lost teeth.  In order to replace the starter ring I need to remove the flywheel.  Well, that so far has been easier said than done.  I have removed the flywheel bolt and used a gear puller in conjunction with a impact wrench. That didn't work. Then I thought that using liquid wrench might loosen it - that didn't work either.

I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanks!  Rick Myers

Answer
Hi Rick,

I like to apply a pneumatic air chisel (with a blunt tip) to the crankshaft.  At the same time, I apply upward pressure to the flywheel with 2 prybars.  A helper person is usually needed.

Let me know how you make out, although I will be away for 2 weeks.

Good Luck,
Michael
