Hi Mr. Jones,
I have a Toro 5 hp I bought about 15 years ago. It most recently has sat in a storage building for 5 years or so. I ran all the gas out of it in hopes that it would be ready when I needed it. But, now when I choke it, and pull the cord like crazy, once in a while, it will run briefly before shutting down. Once, I replaced a $2.50 carb. gasket on a tiller that my Dad had that sat up a long time with gas in it, and that is all that it needed. When mine does crank for the 3 to 5 seconds, the smell of the exhaust is terrible just like my Dads was. Do you think I have the same problem now with the gasket?
Also, I noticed that I had some gas leaking for the carb. area maybe from flooding it.

Thanks for your anticipated answer.
Mike

I would definetly inspect the carburetor.

Do you have a Briggs or Tecumseh engine?

I believe that I have the Tecumseh, and the reason I say that is that all I can find on the engine is Made in Japan

Is the carb a float style carb?  You can tell by a round bowl located on the bottom of the carburetor.
It must be a float style, because I do see a bowl on the bottom of the carburetor.

What is the engine model number?
The model number is 20622.

Let me know.

Answer
It could be a Kawasaki engine because I do not recongnize the model number.

Since it is a float style carb the repair should be the same.  I would remove the carb, disassemble it and blow it out with compressed air.  Blow out all the orfices, inside and out.  Also, I would check the all the gaskets for the intake system to ensure they are still sealing.

Let me know what happens.
