Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh HSK70 Starting and running, float bowl, snowblower

Question
I have a Simplicity 7HP Snowblower with Tecumseh HSK70 Engine. It's 10 years old but not used too much. This year I found that it starts with full choke but will cut out if I try to move choke dial. It seems to run okay but only if it is on full choke.Should I be concerned about other malfunctions and is it okay to operate the engine with full choke only?

Answer
Hi Paul,

I guess you could use it as is, as long as your have enough power.  Try adjusting the high speed mixture screw, located on the bottom of the carb float bowl.  If no difference, then I would suspect that the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Good Luck,
Michael
