I have a MTD snowblower with a Tecumseh HSSK50 engine on it. It runs very rough and everytime I prime the engine it leaks fuel threw the bottom of the carburetor. It also shakes a lot and it doesn't burn very clean. I get a little black smoke from the exhaust. Also when I start it, it stalls frecuently until I run it for a while. I replaced the spark plug but it still runs rough and I checked the oil. It last had a tune up about 3 years ago.

It sounds like the carb needs to be rebuilt.  Rebuilding carbs are the most common repairs we perform, especially on snowblowers.

Do you have access to an air compressor?
Let me know.

Eric,
Yes we have an air compressor. What do we need to do to fix it? Thank you for answering my question!

Answer
Most of the time just removing, dis-assembling and cleaing the carb with carb cleaner and blowing it out will fix the problem.

I'm pretty sure that you have a float style carb.  A couple of items that can cause fuel to leak is a bad float or an old inlet needle/seat.  Usually you can hear and/or feel if there is any fluid inside the float.  Replace the float if it has a hole in it.

The inlet seat is made of viton, a rubber type material, and will get hard with age.  Use a small dental tool to remove the seat.  Install a new seat, GROOVE SIDE DOWN, using some WD-40 for lubricant and a flat punch to push the seat into the hole.  Install the new needle and float.

With the carb upside down, ensure the float is parallel/level with the carb body.  Most of the time you do not need to adjust the float height.  If it is way off then check the inlet needle seat.  Re-assemble the carb.

This is basically a complete carb overhaul.  The most important part is blowing out all the carb orfices with compressed air.

Pay attention the carburetor connecting links before you remove the carb; take a digital picture or draw a rough picture by hand.  The carb itself is very simple and there are not many parts.

Finaly, on Tecumseh engine I would makes sure the headbolts are torqued to 200 inch pounds.  I've found head bolts that loosed up just a little and cause poor performance.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
