i was givin a go cart that hasnt run in 6+ years, its a briggs starton engine 135662 model. so i firt emptied oil, gas, refilled with new oil and gas, got a new spark plug, cleaned the carb, cleaned the vavles, got rid of all the black carbon deposits(not sure if there called carbon deposits). i then put the engine back together, and pulled the started it started then clunked out, it did that repeatably. i think checked the the top of the piston and where the fuel/air mix come in below the valve and they were dry. but the carburator wet inside from the fuel so iam not sure why its not getting to the engine or even if thats the problem? any advice?

Hi ,

I suspect that the problem is a lack of fuel flow.   try to start the engine while squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it starts, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris, gummed fuel or water inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

You need proper compression also.  If you can't check that with a gage, then put your hand over the carb intake and see if you feel a suction as you crank it over.

Good Luck,
Michael

hey thanks it started right up after i went threw it with a wire...now just one more question...its on the go cart and when i hit the gas pedal at first moved then slowed down and wouldnt even move...iam wondering maybe the throttle cables are to stretched out or the springs maybe...it also is very loud and bumpy sounding...is that ok cause it hasnt been ran in 6+ years or should i be aware of something....any advice is greatly appreciated

Answer
Hi John,

I would adjust the carb.  Set the large high speed mixture screw at 1 & 1/2 turns out.  The small low speed mixture screw at 3/4 turn out and the idle screw to give a good idle speed.  Check the throttle to see if it is opening fully when the gas pedal is depressed.

Best,
Michael
