Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 5hp Craftsman Chipper Shredder, craftsman chipper shredder, horizontal shaft

Question

Followup To Eric, It's a 5hp horizontal shaft Briggs mod#135212 type 0272 carb part # 498298

Followup To Eric, removed and cleaned the carb again to no avail. Engine runs great without air cleaner but when it is set in place a strong vacuum is created pulling the filter down and stalls. There does not seem to be any adjustment on the mixture screw as well.I forgot to put it in and it still ran fine without it. With it in there is no difference when it's adjusted. Also, what are the tiny balls in the carb and are they spring loaded. There is no movement in them when I pushed on them(STUCK?)

recently acquired a craftsman chipper from my late father inlaw.Had not been used for several years. Gas was stale so it was drained. The only way it would start was to pour a little fuel in the carb.Assumed it was gummed up so I took it off the engine and sprayed cleaner and used a thin wire to clean out the jet. Now runs perfectly until I replace the air cleaner. As soon as that's done she floods and stalls. What am I missing?

Is the air filter new?

Let's see, when you put the air filter on you restrict air flow thus enriching the fuel mixture causing it to flood.  Does the engine produce a blackish smoke with the filter installed?

It could be possible that an air bleed passage in the carb is still blocked.  You may need to try cleaning again with some compressed air.

Have you replaced the spark plug?  I've seen some weird things caused by spark plugs.
Did the engine come from another location?  I recently moved to a much higher altitude and had to rejet my mower carb...it did the same thing that yours is doing?
Are there any adjustments on the carb?
Let me know.

What brand of engine is on the chipper?  Tecmuseh or Briggs?

Is the engine a horizontal or vertical crankshaft?  What is the engine model, spec or type number and the serial number?

Let me know.

Answer
You have a horizontal shaft engine with a pulsa-jet carb.  If the carb is still choking out with the air filter installed and all the carb orfices are clean then either the main fuel jet is damaged for some reason or another allowing too much fuel or there is a blocked air circuit in the carburetor.  Do you have any friends that have a similar engine that you can switch carburetors with?

Just to make sure we cover the basics, is the spark plug new and gapped to .030 of an inch?  Are the headbolts, carburetor bolts and tank bolts tight?  Based on your description and the fact that horizontal shaft engine flywheel keys rarely shear, I doubt the ignition is at fault.

Let me know if you find another carb.  Did you price a new carburetor?  If so, how much?

Let me know.
