Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Scotts 1642 Rear Wheel Removal, wheel hub, marshall law

Question
I got the grease cap off, and an E clip and washer. I don't see anything else to remove, but the wheel won't budge off the axle. Did I miss something?

Thanks

I've got a Scotts 1642 lawn tractor.  The rear tire is flat. There's a small hole in the sidewall. I want to remove the rear wheel and have the tire plugged or replaced.  How do I remove the wheel from the axle? There's a plastic (or maybe its vinyl) cover over what I'm thinking is probably the nut that holds the wheel on the axle. I'm not sure because the plastic cover turns but it will not come off. Do I need a special tool to remove any nuts or whatever holds the wheel on the axle?

Thanks for your help

Hi Marshall,

The cap should pry off, exposing the axle nut.  If the cap is old, hard and not pliable, you could heat it with a heat gun or hair dryer.

Let me know how you make out.

Answer
You probably didn't miss anything.  The wheel hub may just be rusted and frozen on the shaft.  Try to tap on the inside (differential side) of the hub with a 2x4 and a sledge hammer.  If stubborn, flow some penetrating oil between the hub and shaft, let it sit and try again.  If you jack up one side of the tractor, the fluid may flow down inside better.

Good Luck,
Michael
