Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro 13-38HXL - Hydrostat, liquid gasket, 20w50

Question
I have a older Toro 13-38HXL - Model 71191 / SN 4906102, I believe it uses the 316-0500 Hydro-Gear.

Last year I started having issues where it would run fine on flat ground, but when you went up hill it would start slowing down, now it will run on flat ground and will only pull up a hill when it has not been running long.  If it gets hot it will not pull up a incline.

I am fairly mechanically knowledgeable and can repair anything provided I know what parts I need.

Already I have drained all the oil and replaced with 20W50 and changed the drive belt and made sure it has good tension, I have seen a small improvement, but nothing much, also I have made sure the brake assembly is clean and not locking up.

before I open up the Hydro can you give me some pointers as to what might be wrong and what to look for, also I am assuming that there is a oil filter in this? could it just need replacing.  Once I take this apart do I need a replacement gasket to be able to put it together, or do I just use as liquid gasket?

Where can I get a good price on parts?  Is there a different Hydro I could purchase if needed and put in its place?  I believe that this one is discontinued.

Thanks for all your help, and let me know if you need any more information.

Answer
Hello Peter:

>>From your Description it Sounds like the Center Section (#70250) is Worn and Requires Replacing, the Bypass Actuator is Worn and Requires Replacing or the Cylinder Block Assy (70082) (contains the Actuator) is Worn and Requires Replacing.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/Hydrogear/Hydrogear_Search.html . Then Enter the Model Numbers 316-0500. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing.
