Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Do I need a seal - 2cyle engine carb repair, extreme limits, flatness

Question
I have a Poulan Pro (bvm200 type3, aprox 20hrs on it, 1 yr old) blower which has a 'nylon' carburator adaptor between the cylinder and the carburator assembly (a metal box). One of the two screws holding the adaptor broke-off inside the adaptor, and there was leakage between the adaptor and the carb, resulting in poor running. <g>

I bought a new adaptor and installed it. The setup still leaks between the carb and nylon adaptor. I have tried torquing the screws to extreme limits, loosing them, cleaning and recleaning the surface, etc. I have blown out, cleaned, scraped, and measured 'flatness' and 'smoothness'.

My questions are - Do I have to buy a new carb assembly too? Is there some special sealant I should be using? Do I need to fiddle with the idle/fast screws? Is it a bad adaptor? How can I tell?

Thanks,

Answer
Hi Ralph,

If there was a seal or gasket in place before, then one would still be required.  If not, then you probably have a good seal now.  The problem might be a carb out of adjustment.  Try re setting the mixture screws.  The initial recommended setting is:  High speed screw = 1 & 1/2 turns out.  Low speed screw = 3/4 turn out.

Let me know how you make out.
