Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Hard Starting Craftsman 12HP OHV, sears craftsman, craftsman 917

Question
I have an older Sears Craftsman 917.254641 with a Tecumseh 12HP OHV engine no. 143.396132 ser 9014D.  When trying to start it, the starter at first will turn the engine once, then will not be able to turn the engine completely over again. The solenoid does not click - the starter tries to turn it, but can't do it.  Removed the plug and the starter turns the engine rapidly.  Good battery, checked connections- clean and tight.  It was running when stopped, returned to mow some more, and it will not start

Answer
Hey Ken,
Check the oil level in the engine. If low you have experienced problems with the engine internal. The pistons are more likely to be stuck or melted to the cylinder. It may turn over one or twice but it could have a hard time doing that again. If there is low oil the engine needs to either be replaced or rebuilt and the pistons replaced. Hope this helps. Let me know what I can do.
