Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler Generator governor, holiday rambler rv, wind vane

Question
Hello Lee ,
I have a 1975 Ford Holiday Rambler RV with a single cylinder Kohler Generator and think it is about 8 HP or so ?  It will not maintain RPM under the load of the AC compressor .  Runs the fan just fine , but the governor seems to be unable to govern when the compressor cycles !!  I have moved the setting spring to all sorts of combinations of adjustment holes , etc. with no luck .  One suggestion has been the spark plug , but have not looked at it yet .  I am wondering if perhaps the wind vane shaft arm has slipped or ? That arm only moves a very short distance ( 1/4 inch perhaps ) .

Really frustrated and Kohler simply sent me the address of a local shop .  I have no service manual .
I have attempted to see the Model and serial numbers with a mirror so not sure these are correct --
Model ISMO4
Serial# 696534

Thanks ,

Jamie

Answer
more than likely its not the governor. when it wont keep up the load is too heavy for the generator, not usually the governor. your governor is internal, not a wind vane, the governor settings are there to keep it running at 3600 rpm which is required to get the proper voltage and cycles per minute. if it is running too fast or slow you may end up with more problems than you are expecting. electronic equipment will fail, so if you can return it to its original settings, then check for the load when your ac turns on, if you cant then take it too a shop with certified generator technicians. they will have tachs and the other required equipment to make sure its at the proper speed to get the max out of it.
