Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): pull cord, steel balls, hi chris

i have a older b&s engine its a 8hp i just got it its off a gocart and the pull cord will turn the engine and then retract, but when i try two pull it again it wont rotate the engine it just pulls out but the engine wont rotate please help ty.

Hi Chris,

Remove the recoil assembly and check the bendix, which is attached to the flywheel.  It should turn freely one way, then lock up the otherway.  It may be gummed or dirty internally.  You can open its cover and clean the steel balls and ramps that are inside.
